Salsa Dance Lessons in Utah

Salsa is a dance with origins from various folkloric dances in Latin America. The dances and rhythms were the ingredients that were combined in the kitchen of New York to create the hot, spicy sauce we call Salsa. Come get a taste of it with us!

Different Styles of Salsa Dancing we teach

Salsa is really not a dance but a marketing term used by Fania records on one of their albums solidifiying the name for the genre of music (previously known as Latin jazz). Today when we say "Salsa" we refer to a variety of Salsa dance styles.

The most popular Salsa dance style in Utah is called "Salsa on 1" or "LA style". It is usually taught in most beginner through intermediate salsa classes and danced at most salsa socials. It "breaks" or "accents" the 1st beat of the music with the basic step starting on 1 "breaking" forward for the leaders.

The 2nd style of Salsa we teach is called "Salsa on 2" or "New York" style. This style of salsa was created and kept alive by Eddite Torres (The Mambo King). It "breaks" or "accents" the 2nd beat of the music.

We have also recently added "Cuban Casino Rueda" style of Salsa to our salsa dance class schedule. This style of salsa comes from Cuba, is popular in Miami and is danced in a circle with the leader of the circle calling out the moves. We can't wait to see you in one of our Salsa classes at Df Dance Studio in Utah!

What Swing styles do we teach?

So what style of swing was the video above? If you said West Coast Swing to the previous video you have guessed correctly! The word "Swing" is an umbrella term for a type of music and now also for several dance styles. West Coast Swing (also called Modern Swing) is danced with 6 or 8 count patterns to mostly "modern / popular" music. Country Swing on the other hand doesn't have a specific count or footwork agreed upon among dancers and is mostly danced to popular Country music. Both dances use 4/4 timing and in the recent years Country Swing has been becoming more and more structured and definied with a variety of competitions and dance events popping up around US. Right now Country Swing style is really a "country swing fusion" that borrows a little bit from West Coast Swing in its pattern structure. It is hugely popular in Utah!
