Private Dance Lessons vs Group Classes in Salt Lake City

Not sure whether to start with private dance lessons or group classes? At DF Dance Studio, both options help students grow — they just do it in different ways. Group classes are excellent for learning the basics, progressing with other students, socializing, and becoming part of a dance community. Private lessons are the best way to build correct technique from the start, get individualized feedback, and improve faster around your specific goals.

Group classes = community, consistency, and shared learning • Private lessons = personalized coaching, correct technique, and faster refinement

The Quick Answer

If your goal is to learn with others, get comfortable socially, and build fundamentals in a shared environment, start with group classes. If your goal is better technique, faster progress, and coaching tailored to your body, timing, and habits, start with privates.

Best First Step

Choose group classes if...

You want a welcoming way to begin, learn the basics, meet people, and grow with a community.

  • Great for brand-new dancers
  • Great for regular weekly momentum
  • Great for social confidence and repetition
Fastest Improvement

Choose private lessons if...

You want individual correction, cleaner technique, and the fastest path toward your specific dance goals.

  • Great for learning correctly from the start
  • Great for breaking through plateaus
  • Great for weddings, performance, and competition goals
Best Overall Plan

Many students do both

One of the strongest learning combinations is private lessons for technique and group classes for practice, community, and consistency.

  • Privates sharpen details
  • Groups give repetition and partner variety
  • Together they create balanced progress

Group Classes vs Private Lessons

This is the clearest way to think about it: group classes teach you in a shared setting, while privates teach you as an individual.

Group Classes

Best for basics, community, and steady progress in a shared learning environment.

  • You learn alongside other students at a similar level
  • Excellent for socializing and joining the dance community
  • Helps you practice timing, partnering, and floor comfort with different people
  • Usually the most approachable way to begin dancing
  • Tradeoff: the teacher must divide attention across the whole class

Private Lessons

Best for correct technique, personalized coaching, and faster progress toward specific goals.

  • The lesson moves at your pace, not the group’s pace
  • You get immediate feedback on posture, timing, connection, and mechanics
  • Excellent for fixing bad habits before they become automatic
  • Ideal for focused goals like weddings, performances, competitions, or confidence-building
  • Tradeoff: privates are a bigger investment per session than group classes

Who Each Option Is Best For

Most students are not asking “Which one is better?” They are asking “Which one fits my goal right now?” That is the better question.

Group Classes Are Best For

Students who want to learn with others

  • Beginners who want a friendly entry point
  • Students who enjoy shared energy and social learning
  • Dancers who want to practice the basics repeatedly
  • People looking for a community, not just instruction
  • Students who want a regular weekly habit
Private Lessons Are Best For

Students who want personal coaching

  • Students who want to learn correct technique from the start
  • Dancers who feel stuck and need individualized feedback
  • Couples preparing for a wedding or special event
  • Students with performance or competition goals
  • Anyone who wants faster progress with less guesswork

Why Many Students Combine Both

One of the smartest ways to improve is to use private lessons for correction and group classes for repetition. That combination helps students improve with both quality and consistency.

Technique

Privates clean things up

Private lessons help you understand what your body is doing, what is not working, and what to change right away.

Repetition

Groups help you apply it

Group classes give you repetition, partner variety, and the chance to practice in a more social, real-world setting.

Momentum

Together they speed progress

Instead of choosing between structure and personalization, many students get the best result by using both at the same time.

Why Private Lessons Work

Private lessons are the fastest way to improve with focused attention

In a private lesson, you move at your own pace and get coaching tailored to your goals, strengths, and challenges. That is why private lessons are often the best place to build correct technique from the beginning, improve partner communication, and gain confidence more quickly.

  • Confidence on the dance floor: private coaching gives you more specific information than a group format can usually provide
  • Better musicality: if hearing the beat or staying on time feels hard, individualized help can train your ear faster
  • Cleaner lead and follow skills: privates help fix pulling, guessing, and unclear communication
  • Goal-based progress: whether your goal is social dancing, performance, or competition, privates keep the lesson centered on you

Important Info Before Your First Private Lesson

These are the details most students want before they book: how to schedule, what to wear, how pricing works, and what happens if plans change.

Scheduling

To schedule a private lesson, please request an appointment online or call 801.466.0490. Private lessons are a prepaid service, so payment is taken when your appointment is confirmed.

What to wear

Wear something comfortable and pay attention to your shoes. Smooth leather soles are usually best because they help you avoid sticking or slipping on the floor. Dance shoes are available for sale at the studio and become especially helpful as students get more serious.

Rescheduling and canceling

We require 24 hours notice for appointment changes or cancellations. For Monday appointments, cancellations must be made by 4:00 PM on Saturday. Please contact the studio directly by phone at 801.466.0490 or by email at frontdesk@dfdancestudio.com. Please do not contact your instructor directly for scheduling changes.

Pricing

A single private lesson is $90 for 50 minutes. The price is the same for one or two people in a lesson. Packages lower the cost per lesson, and you can see the details on the private lesson pricing page.

Instructors

While we try to match you with your preferred instructor, DF Dance Studio works as a team. Instructors follow shared lesson plans, keep notes, and communicate about student progress, so students can still receive consistent training even when they work with more than one teacher.

How long does it take to get good at dancing?

It depends on your goals, how often you practice, and how you define “good.” For most students, the first lesson makes the path much clearer because it helps identify pace, priorities, and the best plan forward.

Still Not Sure Which One to Start With?

A simple rule works well: start with group classes if you want basics, community, and a regular class rhythm. Start with privates if you want personal correction, cleaner technique, and faster goal-based progress. If you want the strongest overall plan, combine both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are group classes or private lessons better for beginners?

Both can work well. Group classes are often the easiest and most social way to begin, while privates are often the best way to learn correct technique from the start.

Do private lessons help you improve faster?

Yes. Private lessons usually help students improve faster because the teacher can focus only on that student’s timing, posture, technique, and goals.

Do I need a partner for group classes or private lessons?

Usually no. Many students come on their own, and both formats can still be a great fit depending on your goals.

Can I do both group classes and privates at the same time?

Yes, and many students do. Privates help with correction and direction, while group classes help with repetition, community, and comfort dancing with others.

Are private lessons only for advanced dancers?

No. Private lessons are valuable for beginners too, especially when the goal is to build good habits early and avoid confusion later.
